Godzilla! The Complete Guide to Moviedom's Mightiest Monster
This definitive book on the movie franchise was published overseas in 1998 after a Hollywood-based federal judge accepted Toho Pictures' remarkable argument no one could write a book about Godzilla without Toho's permission — thereby creating Soviet-style "taboo" subject matter.
The U.S. edition made legal history as the first American book subjected to "prior restraint" (pre-publication censorship by the U.S. government) for reasons other than libel, plagiarism or obscenity. Publisher William Morrow, citing expense, did not appeal.
The case became national news through CNN, Entertainment Weekly, Salon, Bloomberg News and the legal journal IP: Intellectual Property.
